Cryogenic Storage of Stem Cells

In the Genico laboratory a bacteriological sample is taken and the cord blood is thoroughly tested for the presence of infectious agents. Then the stem cells are isolated and the live cells are counted.

The hematopoietic cell samples are divided into two separate samples. The cells destined for long-term storage are placed in a cryoprotectant solution of DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide). The temperature is reduced step by step through a process controlled by special software. This demanding process requires great care to prevent the formation of ice crystals inside the cells, which could damage the cell membranes.

Once freezing is complete, the pouches are stored in special containers for biological material along with nitrogen gas. The temperature is constant and remains below -170°C. The stem cells can be stored for a theoretically unlimited period of time.
