Collection and Test

StepOne© expanded newborn Screening requires only a simple blood sample. Blood is drawn quickly and with no risk whatsoever; this can be done in any doctor's office, consultation centre, or health-care institution that provides this service. The appropriate Genico kit is used for this purpose.

Just a few drops of blood, drawn from the baby's heel, are all that is needed for testing. Ideally, the test is done between 24 and 48 hours after birth, but not until after the baby has nursed for the first time (nursing stimulates the metabolism). If your child was not tested at birth, testing is still possible until puberty.

The blood sample is placed in a box made of (absorbent) blotting paper and sent to the analytical laboratory.

The findings are communicated to the attending physician in a sealed envelope within 15 to 30 days after the sample is sent.
